Summer Institute 2019 | Melbourne

Summer Institute 2019 | Melbourne

The 2019 AVID Australia Summer Institute is being held in Melbourne from 27-29 November.

We invite all AVID schools to join our growing community for AVID Australia’s premier professional learning event.

What is Summer Institute?

Summer Institute uses a full immersion model of professional learning. Teachers get the opportunity to become students in a class, so they can experience and experiment with a number of explicit teaching strategies from students’ perspectives. Participants are assigned to a single strand over the course of three days. On days 2 and 3, times are scheduled to meet with members from your school to reflect and share the learning from each strand and plan for the following year’s implementation.

Who should attend?

AVID’s research and experience has shown that schools are best served when all staff engage in AVID continuous professional learning. Summer Institute is unique to AVID’s professional learning model. It offers schools the opportunity to deeply immerse a number of teachers in essential content and pedagogical strategies, along with allocated time for site teams to meet and develop their implementation model consistently across the school. Summer Institute provides a great opportunity to improve and expand an AVID school’s  site team and content teachers’ shared focus on school improvement. A site team typically includes representatives from:

  • Leadership
  • AVID Coordinator/Coach
  • Learning area specialists/leaders
  • Year level specialists/leaders
  • Support staff

What’s new this year?

Opening Session: Like last year, we will hold the Opening Session at the end of Day 1. However to accommodate growing numbers and provide a quality experience, we’re holding the Opening Ceremony at Williamstown Town Hall at 104 Ferguson Street, Williamstown.  Williamstown is a beautiful seaside suburb with a variety of al fresco dining options.  It’s a great spot to connect with colleagues and strand buddies over a meal or a drink after the Opening Ceremony.  Buses will be provided for participants to get to and from the Opening Ceremony.  If you do choose to kick on in Williamstown after the Opening Ceremony, then Williamstown railway station is nearby so you can easily catch a train back to Footscray or the CBD.  Further details can be found below and will be sent via email to all participants before the event.

Different location for Primary STEAM strand: The Primary STEAM strand will be held at Wyndham Tech School, a high-tech learning environment which is hosted by Victoria University on its Werribee campus.

Strands: A total of 16 strands will be available for selection this year. Four of those strands will be offered for the first time and two strands have been revised.

New strands:

  • Primary STEAM
  • Leading wholeschool improvement with a customised certification tool
  • AVID for Higher Education: Best Practices in Action

Strands

initial image

Strands require a minimum number of participants to run. Once a strand has been filled, it may not be possible to add further participants to that particular strand. Therefore, we ask that each participant nominate two strand preferences on their registration form. Every effort will be made to place participants in their first strand preference, however, room capacity may limit the number of strand participants. Our advice: register early to secure your preferred strand.
