Thank you for your interest in the AVID Student Speaker Competition.

Please make sure you read this page carefully (especially the Task Guiding Prompts section below) before you upload your competition entry. Don’t forget, entries close on 30 August 2019!

Please note: it is essential for you to keep the original copy of your declaration form. Task guiding prompts

Theme: Seizing Opportunities

Opportunities are like waves. To ride the perfect wave requires the right timing, positioning and skills. It can be hard to catch a wave but building your skills with practise and a growth mindset can ensure you are in position and ready to take off!

AVID makes sure you are fit to seize opportunities, and just like surfing a wave, it’s an exhilarating ride!

In a video, no longer than 2 minutes, tell us how you have seized opportunities in your life, with AVID’s support, to achieve your goals.

Think about

  •  Who are the people who most inspire you and why?
  • What are the issues in your community, school or personal circumstances?
  • How have you overcome any challenges?
  • How are you addressing the challenges in front of you?
  • How are you changing your circumstances or the circumstances of someone else around you?
  • Does anything stop you from pursuing your dreams?
  • What skills do you need to achieve your goals?

Note these questions are designed to be a prompt for your initial drafting and planning only.  You do not need to answer/respond to these directly in your video.

Helpful resources

A good speech is both well structured and delivered. The articles below include some helpful tips on structure, speech delivery, body language, and managing any fear you may have about public speaking. Good luck with it!
