This page contains the strand information for the 2019 AVID Australia Summer Institute. Here you will find descriptions of all the strands that are being offered at the Institute this year, and recommendations about the target audience for each strand.
When selecting strands, it is best to take into account the needs of the site team at your school. Please note that strands need to attract a minimum number of participants to be able to run. If you are unsure which strands to book staff in for, please contact the AVID Australia team and we will be happy to help.

Do you have a number of students for whom English is not their first language? The AVID Academic Language and Literacy (ALL) strand is suitable for teachers of all content areas as it focuses on modifying high engagement teaching practices in every content area specific to the needs of students for whom English is not their first language. Participants will connect WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading) with intentional language development practices and routines to strengthen listening, speaking, reading, and writing literacy for all students. AVID Schoolwide team members will gain insight and align philosophies to help their students navigate rigorous content, achieve academically, and adequately prepare for career success.

In addition to offering the ALL strand this year, from 2021, AVID Australia will offer schools the opportunity to enhance AVID implementation for students with additional English language needs through AVID’s Excel program. Excel is an additional AVID program that customises AVID strategies for students for whom English is an additional language. Excel begins with the ALL (Academic Language Learners) strand and schools wanting to implement Excel in 2021 must have at least two teachers trained in the ALL strand as a foundation for offering Excel.
AVID Australia will invite interested schools to participate in a Pilot of Excel which will take place in 2020. For further information, please contact AVID.Australia@vu.edu.au
This strand is designed for English language arts teachers (grades 6–12) who are experienced in AVID concepts and methodologies. Participants will explore the writing process and writing-to-learn strategies, as well as engage in a variety of activities designed to help build their students’ oral language skills. Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading are also included as tools for developing and scaffolding these skills, from foundational to advanced levels, via a rigorous curriculum, with an emphasis on college readiness.
Prerequisite: English Language Arts: Exploring Texts with Strategic Reading strand is a recommended prerequisite, however, participants with a basic knowledge of AVID concepts and methodologies will be able to participate actively in this strand
Curriculum: The Write Path English Language Arts: Informing Ourselves and Others Through Writing and Speaking Teacher Guide
For NSW participants: Completing English Language Arts: Informing Ourselves Through Writing and Speaking – Summer Institute will contribute 13 hours and 30 minutes of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 6.2.2, 6.3.2, 6.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
This strand focuses on implementing research-based reading practices across all content areas and grade levels to promote a schoolwide approach to disciplinary literacy. Participants will learn how to approach reading as a content expert, empowering student inquiry through reading in their specific content area. Intentionally integrating academic thinking skills and the gradual release of responsibility model into the reading process ensures all students have the college and career readiness skills necessary for thriving in the 21st century. This strand is ideal for educators who want to increase the level of academic rigor and discourse in their classrooms through literacy and the implementation of technology to further student learning.

Curriculum: AVID Reading for Disciplinary Literacy: A Schoolwide Approach
For NSW participants: Completing AVID Reading for Disciplinary Literacy – Summer Institute will contribute 13 hours and 30 minutes of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 6.2.2, 6.3.2, 6.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
This strand is designed for AVID administrators, coordinators, teachers, and site team members who are ready to work with their sites to conduct a self-examination and address issues of inclusivity and accountability for all students through a growth mindset. The strand will provide a framework of effective methodologies that validates the culture of all students in the classroom. These research-based strategies will make relevant learning connections to increase subject-matter comprehension. As a result of attending this strand, participants will be able to create multi-dimensional lessons with rigorous differentiated instruction.

Curriculum: AVID Culturally Relevant Teaching: A Schoolwide Approach
For NSW participants: Completing AVID Culturally Relevant Teaching – Transforming Educators – Summer Institute will contribute 13 hours and 30 minutes of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 6.2.2, 6.3.2, 6.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
The Digital Teaching and Learning strand brings educators together to experience and explore digital strategies and resources, using collaboration, communication, and choice to engage students in their learning and knowledge creation. Come ready to connect with colleagues in building a technology-rich classroom culture, infusing AVID methodologies both digitally and face-to-face. This strand is designed to support experienced AVID Elective and Secondary Schoolwide teachers in blending WICOR strategies with technology tools to prepare students with the skills that they need to be post-secondary and work-ready. Participants are supported during the process with effective technology teaching practices, resources, and guidance on how to use technology to facilitate student learning and engagement. Participants must bring a laptop power cord, and earbuds/headphones with them to the strand. Device software and web browser need to be up to date. Tablets that can be used as laptops can be used, but other digital devices cannot be supported yet.
Prerequisites: Participants should: have attended at least one Summer Institute strand or Path to Schoolwide training equivalent; Be familiar with WICOR instructional practices; Currently work with students who have daily in-class access to technology; Understand device classroom management and have experimented with lessons using technology with AVID instructional practices; Be able to navigate multiple browser windows/tabs and save and locate files on their device; Have access to a preferred cloud platform and be able to log in and create and share documents; Connect to a Wi-Fi network.

For NSW participants: Completing AVID Digital Teaching and Learning – Summer Institute will contribute 13 hours and 30 minutes of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 6.2.2, 6.3.2, 6.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
This strand is designed for history/social science teachers (grades 6–12) who are interested in incorporating rigorous instructional strategies to prepare students for challenging honors and advanced courses. Participants will explore WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading) strategies as a means to bring the historical inquiry process into the history/social science classroom. Participants will experience and reflect upon elements of focused note-taking, primary and secondary source analysis techniques, document-based questions, essay-writing techniques, the critical reading process, and a variety of academic language discussion activities that promote higher-level thinking and deeper content acquisition. This strand supports the implementation of AVID Schoolwide.

For NSW participants: Completing AVID History Social Science Through Inquiry (History 2) – Summer Institute will contribute 13 hours and 30 minutes of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 6.2.2, 6.3.2, 6.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
AVID Australia is preparing to launch a new, online, responsive certification tool and process in 2020 that has been created in partnership with the Inflexion team in Oregon. This strand is suited for school teams ready to develop a distributed leadership model to take AVID school wide trialling our new certification tool. Schools are using the Inflexion Approach as a framework to implement a variety of school wide initiatives and demonstrate how they align to AVID’s four domains (Culture, Leadership, Systems, and Instruction). The Inflexion Approach is an organizational framework specifically designed to support school wide implementation efforts and to build learning communities that work for all students. During this strand:

- Principals will lead school teams to identify current approaches, initiatives, and programs provided to ALL students, SOME students, and FEW students in their school; as well as making explicit ways that AVID supports and aligns to these efforts.
- School teams will use the online tool to collect self-assessment data at the school level that identifies schools’ strengths and challenges associated with AVID implementation.
- School teams will use the data and recommendations from the online tool to set (your school improvement) goals and document plans.

This strand is designed for mathematics teachers new to AVID concepts and methodologies. This strand focuses on strategies outlined in AVID’s The Write Path I Mathematics Teacher Guide (provided to participants), which emphasizes the use of Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR) as tools for learning in the mathematics classroom. Participants will also explore techniques for implementing WICOR strategies in mathematics courses, including: Cornell Notes, Philosophical Chairs discussions, and effective collaborative strategies. Participants will also learn about the basics of AVID and how to support the AVID system in their respective schools. Mathematics 1 is organised to reinforce the strengths of vertical team articulation.

For NSW Participants: Completing AVID Mathematics 1 – Summer Institute will contribute 13 hours and 30 minutes of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 6.2.2, 6.3.2, 6.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
This strand is designed for mathematics teachers who have taken the Mathematics 1 strand and are experienced with AVID strategies and methodologies. This strand will introduce additional vocabulary and WICOR strategies including Interactive Notebooks and Socratic Seminars as well as deepen participants’ understanding of AVID methodologies practiced in Mathematics 1. The focus of the strand will be on ensuring that all students gain access to rigorous instruction through dynamic and engaging activities.
Mathematics 2 is organised to reinforce and strengthen vertical team articulation.

Curriculum: The Write Path II Mathematics Teacher Guide
For NSW participants: Completing AVID Mathematics 2 – Summer Institute will contribute 13 hours and 30 minutes of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 6.2.2, 6.3.2, 6.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
This is a first-year strand for primary educators who will be implementing AVID strategies and methodologies in grades K-6 classrooms. Participants will practice and discuss strategies, lessons, and activities focused on WICOR and student success skills in order to facilitate students’ access to rigorous content across all content areas. In addition, training will include opportunities to provide differentiated instruction to students to help develop a culture of student success, academic achievement, and university and career awareness. Participants will also make connections with the AVID Primary Essentials of Instruction and Culture as they look at implementation both individually and as a site team.

Curriculum: AVID Elementary Foundations
For NSW participants: Completing AVID Primary Implementation K-6 will contribute 13 hours and 30 minutes of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 6.2.2, 6.3.2, 6.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
The new Primary STEAM strand builds on the Primary Maths strand delivered at Summer Institute in 2018. It will look at how to utilise maths in context through the lens of STEAM. It is designed for experienced AVID primary K-6 teachers. The strand will be held at Wyndham Tech School and will include hands-on activities with cutting-edge technology. Teachers should have at least one year of AVID implementation experience to scaffold to this next level of instructional rigour.
This strand is partially funded by a prestigious Sidney Myer Fund large grant awarded to AVID Australia for 2018-2020.
Prerequisite: Foundations (Primary) Implementation strand.
For NSW participants: Completing AVID Primary STEAM will contribute 11 hours and 15 minutes of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 6.2.2, 6.3.2, 6.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
This strand is designed for science teachers to apply AVID concepts and methodologies in science content areas. Focusing on the strategies in The Write Path 1 Science Teacher Guide (provided to participants), this strand emphasises the use of Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organisation, and Reading (WICOR) as support structures for learning in the science classroom. Participants will learn how to apply WICOR methodologies to strengthen student processing in the science classroom. The strand incorporates strategies for implementing critical reading and writing-to-learn processes, Cornell Notes, interactive notebooks, effective use of discussion, and experimental design in science courses. Science 1 is organised to reinforce the strengths of vertical team articulation.
Curriculum: The Write Path I Science Teacher Guide
For NSW participants: Completing AVID Science 1 – Summer Institute will contribute 13 hours and 30 minutes of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 6.2.2, 6.3.2, 6.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
This strand is for new AVID sites and is written for first-year AVID content teachers, Elective classroom teachers, and AVID site coordinators. This strand focuses on the academic and organisational skills needed to effectively advocate for AVID students and to build the AVID schoolwide focus across a school.

Curriculum: Focused Note-Taking CD; AVID Elective Essentials for High School and Focused Note-Taking CD; AVID Elective Essentials for Middle School and AVID Elective Essentials for High Schools.
For NSW participants: Completing AVID Secondary Implementation – Summer Institute will contribute 13 hours and 30 minutes of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 6.2.2, 6.3.2, 6.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
This strand is designed for teachers of any subject area including business, computer applications, visual and performing arts, health and physical education, and other elective classes. Participants will gain an understanding of how skills development, tertiary and work-readiness can be supported in all subject areas. Additionally, participants will learn about AVID methodologies and WICOR strategies such as goalsetting, focused note- taking, organisation, and time management. This strand will focus on incorporating these university readiness skills into all classes, from physical education to visual arts across secondary school.

For NSW participants: Completing AVID Student Success – Summer Institute will contribute 13 hours and 30 minutes of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 6.2.2, 6.3.2, 6.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
This strand is designed for AVID Elective teachers, AVID coordinators, and designated site team members. Participants will learn to train, monitor, and coach tutors and students in implementing rigorous tutorials that increase student achievement. Please note that if you have already been trained in the 2012 Tutorology materials to meet Certification requirements, we recommend that you take a different strand.
