Finding your Community of Practice

8.30am start

Summer Institute Community of Practice rooms are located on floors four, eight and twelve of Victoria University City Tower.

Following Registration, please use the lifts or stairs to proceed to your Community of Practice for an 8.30am start. Use the table below to find your Community of Practice floor and room. You can also find this information on the back of your name tag.

Connecting to WiFi

Participants can access guest Wi-fi for the duration of Summer Institute.

Participants will receive an email prior to Summer Institute with instructions on how to connect to WiFi.  These details are unique to each participant. Please ensure you have these details available to access on Day 1.

The details will be sent from the email address ‘wifiadmin@vu.edu.au’ with the subject ‘Victoria University Guest VU Wi-Fi’.

IT assistance will be available on each level during Summer Institute but participants can contact AVID.Australia@vu.edu.au if they haven’t received their Wi-fi log in the week prior to SI.

Breaks

Regular breaks are provided throughout Summer Institute.

Catered Morning Tea and Lunch are provided on the days indicated above and will be available during the allocated times in catering rooms on floors four, eight and twelve. Please use the catering room on the same level as your Community of Practice.

Male, female and accessible toilets are available on all floors of Victoria University City Tower. Refer to signage for toilet locations.

Finding your Workshop

2-3.30pm Days One and Two

Summer Institute Workshop rooms are located on floors five, seven and eleven of Victoria University City Tower.

Use the table below to find your Workshop floor and room. You can also find this information on the back of your name tag.

General Session and Networking

4 – 6 pm

At the conclusion of Workshops on Day One, please make your way to ibis Melbourne, 15/21 Therry Street, Melbourne for General Session and Networking Event.

Join the AVID Australia community where over 90 schools have been inspired by AVID over thirteen years; and hear stories from teachers, students and school leaders while you network with colleagues from across Australia.

Introducing our Speakers - General Session & Networking Event

We are excited to announce the speakers for Summer Institute including the winner of the 2023 Student Speaker Competition.

Keynote Speaker

Betsy Armstrong

AVID Staff Developer, Tertiary Professor, Tertiary and Career Specialist, AVID Coordinator/Elective Teacher from Melbourne, Florida

Betsy brings expertise in teaching and coordinating AVID and facilitating professional learning. She is a specialist in curriculum, instruction, college and careers, and AVID site team leadership. Betsy has been in education since 1982, joining AVID in 2002. During her career, she has facilitated national and regional professional learning, and overseen the growth and development of AVID Schoolwide, building and coaching AVID National Demonstration sites in the United States. Betsy is also recognised for her leadership of teachers in the art of instruction and in her forty year teaching career has taught at the elementary, middle, secondary, and postsecondary levels.

Teacher Speaker

Tim Oates

Head of Secondary, Mundaring Christian College, Western Australia

Tim is an experienced educator and school leader. While Head of Secondary at South Coast Baptist College (SCBC) for six years, Tim led the secondary staff to improve academic outcomes and turn around declining student numbers, taking the school from 198 to 500 secondary students. He contributed to the successful implementation of AVID at SCBC and is now implementing AVID at Mundaring Christian College. Tim is passionate about inspiring and equipping students for success beyond school. Tim has been married for 26 years, has three adult children and enjoys kiteboarding and wing foiling in his spare time.

Student Speaker

Hayley McGraw

Year 6, Leichhardt State School, Queensland

Hayley is a Year 6 Student Leader at Leichhardt State School who shows individual determination and applies perseverance when faced with a challenge. Hayley has worked tirelessly to develop organisational skills and is always willing to work collaboratively with others. She takes pride in being part of many extra-curricular opportunities, including the school choir, touch football team, Wakakiri dance group and representing her school on the Ipswich Children’s Advisory Council. Hayley has 5 siblings and was inspired to enter the Student Speaker competition as an opportunity to further develop her confidence and reflect on how lucky she feels to receive an education. At school, Hayley enjoys English, Science and The Arts and dreams to one day be a scientist.
