Our Western Australian colleagues recently attended WA Path. This included a two-day Community of Practice (CoP) and a day of teacher-led workshops that celebrated and shared excellent teaching and learning practice delivered in AVID schools.

The educators built professional learning communities based on AVID’s shared language and heard directly from practising AVID teachers about the successes and challenges they are experiencing in their classrooms.

The two-day event saw educators undertaking the Creating Engaging and Rigorous Classrooms CoP that lays the foundation of instruction for students to access rigorous coursework and content.

I realised that I have been incorporating AVID strategies into my teaching practice without fully recognising them as such. The WA Path has given me the opportunity to reflect on these practices and consider how I can embed AVID strategies more intentionally and at a deeper level. I also gained insights into several strategies that I had previously overlooked or found challenging to implement, which I am now confident and willing to trial.

The teacher-led workshops provided a great opportunity for teaching and learning leaders and aspiring leaders to develop their leadership and presentation skills as they shared and discussed effective teaching practices.
