Prepare for Summer Institute

Canvas is your eLearning platform.

Communities of Practice will be facilitated as interactive, in-person sessions, with participants accessing and contributing to resources on the eLearning platform as required.

Use the guides below to set yourself up for a successful Summer Institute!

Creating a Canvas account and login

Canvas is the eLearning platform that you will use during Summer Institute to access materials and resources. Your Summer Institute registration includes twelve months of access to these materials.

You can find the AVID Australia Canvas login page at avidaustralia.instructure.com.

It is important that you follow the steps in this guide to activate your AVID Australia Canvas account and begin familiarising yourself with the platform prior to coming to Summer Institute.

When logged in to Canvas, you should have access to your Summer Institute Community of Practice. Contact AVID Australia if you are unable to access your Community of Practice after following the guide below.

Follow these steps to set your AVID Australia Canvas password and access your Summer Institute materials.

  1. Using Chrome or Firefox, go to the AVID Australia Canvas login page at avidaustralia.instructure.com.
  2. Click on Forgot Password?
  3. Enter the email address that you used to register for Summer Institute.
  4. Click Request Password.
  5. Check your email for the Forgot Password: Canvas email from AVID Australia Summer Institute.
  6. In the email you receive, click on Click here to set a new password.
  7. Enter and confirm a new password for your Canvas account on the page that opens.
  8. Use your email and new password combination to log in on the page that follows.
  9. You should now have access to your Canvas dashboard.
  10. Contact AVID Australia if you are unable to log in or if your Canvas dashboard does not display your Summer Institute Community of Practice.

Your Community of Practice will be available on your Canvas dashboard from 27 November 2024.

Using an existing Canvas account and login

If you have an existing AVID Australia Canvas login from a previous AVID Australia event, you can use it to access your Summer Institute Community of Practice materials.

Simply log in to the AVID Australia Canvas site using your existing credentials and view the Dashboard to access the Summer Institute materials.

Contact AVID Australia if you are unable to log in or if your Canvas dashboard does not display your Summer Institute Community of Practice.

If you are unsure of your existing AVID Australia Canvas login, follow the steps in the previous section to reset your password.

Your Community of Practice will be available on your Canvas dashboard from 27 November 2024.

Accessing MyAVID

MyAVID is an online repository of evidence-informed, high engagement teaching and learning resources, that are regularly updated with new AVID materials.

MyAVID will be used throughout Summer Institute, so please test your existing MyAVID login or create a MyAVID account if you do not have one.  

If needed, consult the MyAVID Guide on how to create a MyAVID account.

What to bring

Bring your own device, charger and headphones. For 2024 Summer Institute we are actioning environmentally responsible practices where possible. Please bring your own water bottle as no water bottles will be provided. You may also choose to bring your own coffee cup. Please bring your own bag.

Laptop, charger and headphones

Summer Institute participants are required to bring a laptop with charger and headphones to access the eLearning platform.

WiFi access will be provided at the venue and support staff will be available to assist with any IT issues.

Summer Institute participants will receive:

  • Handouts relevant to your Community of Practice and Workshop
  • AVID Australia pen
  • AVID Australia lanyard
  • AVID Australia USB Hub
  • A notebook

Connecting to WiFi

Participants can access guest Wi-fi for the duration of Summer Institute.

Participants will receive an email prior to Summer Institute with instructions on how to connect to WiFi.  These details are unique to each participant. Please ensure you have these details available to access on Day 1.

The details will be sent from the email address ‘wifiadmin@vu.edu.au’ with the subject ‘Victoria University Guest VU Wi-Fi’.

IT assistance will be available on each level during Summer Institute but participants can contact AVID Australia if they haven’t received their Wi-fi log in the week prior to SI.

Accessibility

We are committed to ensuring that Summer Institute is an accessible event.

Victoria University City Tower and ibis Melbourne are accessible venues. Accessible facilities are available on every level of Victoria University City Tower.

The eLearning course materials include transcripts for videos, alt text for images and colour compliance.  Our AVID eLearning platform also has an Immersive Reader application.
