All AVID Australia schools are invited to attend AVID’s primary professional learning event − Summer Institute − which has been running for six successive years.

Summer Institute is a three-day professional learning program for new and existing AVID educators. Teachers are immersed in a series of interactive workshops introducing them to the knowledge, skills and strategies that are helping over 1,500,000 American AVID students achieve their potential.

This year’s Institute will be held from 30 November to 2 December 2016 in Melbourne.

AVID’s explicit teaching framework generates a nurturing learning environment that pays equal attention to students’ academic, social and emotional development. AVID Australia’s mission is to close the achievement and opportunity gaps by preparing all students for post-secondary education, skills development and work-readiness so they can participate in a global community as productive citizens.

In 2016, AVID Australia is offering five new strands, including our first leadership strand for school principals and our first Australian developed strands (Primary Critical Literacy and Primary Maths). Network with your fellow AVID educators from across Australia to refresh, consolidate and streamline your teaching strategies for the upcoming 2017 school year.

We look forward to seeing you in Melbourne!

Registration process

Registering for the AVID Australia Summer Institute 2016 is a simple process.

You must register each member of your school who will be attending strands at the Summer Institute and submit your registrations to AVID.Events@vu.edu.au . Follow the steps below or download our detailed Registration Help Guide.

Download the Summer Institute registration form (Dropbox, 19KB).

  1. Open the registration form in Excel and fill out all the white fields (boxes). Enter the registration details for each member of your school attending the Institute. Select their 1st and 2nd strand preferences using the drop-down menus in the spreadsheet (for more information regarding strands please see the ‘Strands’ section on this page and refer to the strand guide). Also please indicate any dietary requirements.
  2. Save the registration form and send to AVID.Events@vu.edu.au
  3. Once the registration form has been submitted, your finance contact will be issued with an invoice. Please read about our refund policy in the FAQs.
  4. Each participant will also be sent login details to the AVID Australia Launches and Boosts eLearning course. All participants will be required to complete online Launches prior to the event. After Summer Institute, participants will be given access to online Boosts to consolidate their learning.

Please note: Only licensed AVID schools and schools who have committed to start implementation in 2017 are eligible to attend Summer Institute. If you would like further information about how to become an AVID school please contact AVID Australia (AVID.Australia@vu.edu.au).

Strands

Strands require a minimum number of participants to run. Once a strand has been filled, it may not be possible to add further participants to that particular strand. Therefore, we ask that each participant nominate two strand preferences on their registration form. Every effort will be made to place participants in their first strand preference, however, room capacity may limit the number of strand participants. Our advice: register early to secure your preferred strand.

Launches are to be completed prior to the commencement of Summer Institute. Boosts become available the day after Summer Institute.
