AVID is celebrating outstanding NAPLAN results achieved by established AVID Australia schools. In a nutshell, a new independent, longitudinal AVID NAPLAN Value-add data analysis conducted by Dr Pete Goss and his team shows that students in AVID schools are outperforming students with similar backgrounds across Australia.

NAPLAN data is powerful, but it can be hard to interpret. Pete Goss‘s new Value-Added NAPLAN analysis approach makes things much clearer. Implementing AVID with fidelity over time shows sustained improvement over ten years plus in established AVID schools in all states.

AVID schools are moving student outcomes from below the national average to exceeding national averages in some domains, for example, by up to 18 months in year 9 Writing at Wyndham Secondary College.

Findings from the Goss AVID NAPLAN Value-Added evaluation of AVID’s impact on NAPLAN data include:

  • AVID secondary schools have added up to 2 years of extra NAPLAN learning since 2014
  • On average, AVID schools have added 8 times more value to NAPLAN than their neighbouring schools
  • AVID is about whole school improvement, and the results are seen and sustained across all NAPLAN domains over time
  • AVID helps schools implement strategies that are evidence-informed, practical and affordable
  • AVID schools report that it is AVID’s contextualised, high-quality professional learning that is making the difference in lifting teaching quality in classrooms to raise student outcomes

While analysis of the data each year provides education stakeholders with useful snapshot information on students’ numeracy and literacy performance, looking at a school’s performance over time is how we can see the cumulative, sustained impact of a school’s initiatives to improve students’ NAPLAN outcomes.

We need to change the education conversations to highlight the complexity and time required to advance student outcomes and teaching quality over time with evidence-informed, high-quality professional learning initiatives that respect and amplify teachers’ confidence, capability and agency. We are grateful to Dr Goss and his team for providing this irrefutable evidence that AVID WORKS! We have known this. Now we have the evidence to support our claim.

Championing teachers, school leaders, and students is AVID’s mission. We are so proud to work with educators in AVID Australia schools who live this commitment to the art and craft of becoming a great teacher. Every. Day.
