Welcome to the 2017 AVID Australia Summer Institute page. Here you will find all the information to plan and register for this year’s Summer Institute. We invite all AVID schools to join our growing community for AVID Australia’s premier professional learning event.

Event details

When: 8:00am Wednesday 29 November – 4:00pm Friday 1 December, 2017.

Where: RMIT University, Swanston Academic Building 80, 445 Swanston Street, Melbourne, VIC, 3000.

Please note: The Opening will be held at the Melbourne City Conference Centre, 333 Swanston Street, Melbourne, VIC, 3000. After the Opening participants will proceed to RMIT.

What is Summer Institute?

Summer Institute uses a full immersion model of professional learning. Teachers get the opportunity to become students in a class, so they can experience and experiment with a number of explicit teaching strategies from the students’ perspectives. Participants are assigned to a single strand over the course of three days. On days 2 and 3, times are scheduled to meet with members from your school to reflect and share the learning from each strand and plan for the following year’s implementation.

What’s new this year?

This year, a total of 16 strands will be available for schools to pick from, including three new strands that will be offered for the first time in Australia. Participants who attended the History/Social Science – Through High Engagement Strategies strand last year will be pleased to hear that in 2017 we’ll be offering History/Social Science – Through Inquiry. We are excited to offer AVID’s first ever Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) strands. There will be a K-2 strand and a strand for year levels 3-6. These strands were commissioned by AVID Australia and have been written by the experienced AVID writers, Tim Gill, Jay Kurima and Donna Kortvelesy supported by Australian Staff Developers. Please consult the 2017 Summer Institute Strand Guide for further information about strands.

Who should attend?

AVID’s research and experience has shown that schools are best served when all staff engage in AVID professional learning. Summer Institute is unique in AVID’s professional learning model. It offers schools the opportunity to deeply immerse a number of teachers in essential content and pedagogical strategies, along with allocated time slots for site teams to meet and develop their implementation model. Summer Institute provides a great opportunity to improve and expand an AVID school’s trained site team and content teachers. A site team typically includes:

  • Representation from leadership
  • The AVID Coordinator
  • Learning area specialists/leaders
  • Year level specialists/leaders
  • Support staff representation

Strands require a minimum number of participants to run. Once a strand has been filled, it may not be possible to add further participants to that particular strand. Therefore, we ask that each participant nominate two strand preferences on their registration form. Every effort will be made to place participants in their first strand preference, however, room capacity may limit the number of strand participants. Our advice: register early to secure your preferred strand.
