This publication is designed to be a resource guide for AVID teachers who are preparing students in grades 11 and 12 for college exploration and selection. This guide is organized into four units, one for each semester in the junior and senior years. Each unit includes an overview and a suggested timeline to help teachers plan and organize instructions. AVID College and Careers: A Schoolwide Approach was developed to provide schoolwide educators with a variety of levels of instruction to support, guide, and prepare all students for college and careers. This book is designed to be used in concert with the AVID College and Careers curriculum webpage, and in unison with AVID schoolwide libraries and resources within MyAVID. To support schoolwide implementation, as well as family involvement, each chapter includes specific sections devoted to visioning schoolwide impact, as well as strengthening family involvement in the educational system.

The AVID Tutorial Guide was developed to support implementation of AVID tutorials in grades 6 through 12. Inquiry-based and collaborative, AVID tutorials are a structured routine that takes students through a variety of metacognitive tasks starting with identifying a specific point of confusion all the way through applying its resolution in an academic class. The materials in this text address the specific components of the 10 Steps of the AVID Tutorial Process, as well as preparatory and refining instructional practices with an emphasis on continuous improvement. AVID Academic Language and Literacy: A Schoolwide Approach was developed to provide content teachers with instructional practices and instructional delivery strategies that intentionally support all students as Academic Language Learners schoolwide. In an educational setting that is continually introducing, and expecting comprehension of, increasingly rigorous content and language throughout students’ educational careers, academic language and literacy are critical to success.  The resources in this book are meant to support educators who possess content-specific or grade-level-specific expertise, yet who are not language or literacy experts, and to provide instructional practices that support Academic Language Learners on their path of language development and literacy.

This guide focuses on the Critical Reading Process in language arts and how to strategically scaffold students’ reading experiences to promote critical thinking and writing. Through the use of writing to learn, reading comprehension strategies, inquiry and collaboration structures, and organization and metacognition, teachers support students as they read text—print, non-print, and digital—to discover more about themselves and their world.

The Write Path English Language Arts: Informing Ourselves and Others Through Writing and Speaking is designed to be used as part of the AVID College Readiness System. The stages for process writing are identified separately in the first section of the book and each stage contains numerous strategies to engage students in that particular step of the process. Each strategy description in the book includes ideas for how to increase scaffolding and how to increase rigor, depending on the levels of the students. Other writing sections in this book focus on Writing to Learn and On-Demand Writing. The second section focuses on Oral Language and presents strategies for listening, presentations, discussions, debates, speeches, and performances. Each section presents strategies, teacher tips, and ideas for classroom implementation and differentiation.

The Write Path I Science Teacher Guide provides lessons and activities incorporating a wide range of effective WICOR strategies to deepen students’ science knowledge and skills. These strategies include Cornell notes and Interactive Notebooks as organizational structures for student learning, and creative processing activities that use written explanations and illustrations to help students understand and retain information and concepts. The guide is a resource for science teachers of middle school courses through the most rigorous courses in high school.

The Write Path II Mathematics reinforces the use of writing, inquiry, collaboration and reading in the mathematics classroom. The intended audience of The Write Path II Mathematics is grades 6 through 12 mathematics teachers who have (1) attended AVID Summer Institute and participated in The Write Path I Mathematics content strand, and (2) spent a school year implementing the AVID-based teaching methodologies introduced in The Write Path I Mathematics. The lessons in The Write Path II Mathematics are designed to build upon AVID strategies introduced in The Write Path I Mathematics.

The Student Success Path shows students how to work successfully with their teachers, take effective notes, organize their notebooks, and work collaboratively, preparing them for high school and postsecondary success. The Path includes time logs, planning calendars, graphic organizers, and activities such as “Making Good Decisions about Your Future,” “The Importance of Your Notebook,” and “Accomplishing Goals.”
